Emotions: The Daily Weather

Sometimes you just wake up in a surly mood. Maybe a little cranky. Other days, you wake up after a great night of sleep, full-hearted ready to crush the day.

Does anybody really know why some days your mood is “up” and others not-so-much? Sleep, nutrition, stress all play a role, of course. But, sometimes I wonder whether some of us just have a certain disposition.

I like the metaphor that your emotions are like the weather: Changing, hard to predict, occasionally intense, always hard to control. Your mind is the sky where the weather gets moving.

Our job is to watch and monitor the weather. That’s pretty much all we can do. We can sense it, give it a name, remind ourselves that it too will change, and then try to get re-grounded. We don’t have to let it carry us away.

And, on the flipside, when the “weather” is good and clear, we can lean into it and try to take advantage, too.
